Reed Smith Labor and Employment Counsel Betty Graumlich represents management in a wide variety of employment-related litigation, including harassment, retaliation, race, sex, age, disability and religious discrimination, Family and Medical Leave Act issues, Fair Labor Standards Act issues, wrongful discharge, covenants not to compete, defamation and other employment contract and tort issues. She has also counseled employers on these issues and has drafted employment policies and covenants not to compete tailored to the specific needs of the clients she represents.

Betty also practices traditional labor law. She has handled both contract interpretation and discipline grievance arbitrations, counseled employers on issues involving the National Labor Relations Act, and has served as strike counsel during collective bargaining proceedings.

For more than 20 years, Betty has practiced in federal and state courts and before federal and state agencies, including the EEOC and various state human relations commissions. In addition, she has represented employers in unemployment compensation proceedings and Department of Labor investigations.

Betty earned her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law where she was Order of the Coif and Senior Editorial Board Member of The Virginia Law Review. She received her B.A., with High Distinction, in Political and Social Thought from University of Virginia. As an undergraduate, she was an Echols Scholar.

Betty is admitted to the Bars of Virginia and the District of Columbia, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Court of Appeals - District of Columbia Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals - Fourth Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals - Fifth Circuit, U.S. Court of Appeals - Seventh Circuit, U.S. District Court - District of Columbia, U.S. District Court - Eastern District of Virginia, U.S. District Court - Western District of Virginia, U.S. District Court - Northern District of Indiana, and the U.S. District Court - Northern District of Texas. Betty is an active member of the Virginia Bar Association, the Richmond Bar Association, and the American Bar Association, and also serves as a member of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.
