When he practiced law in Alberta, Lyle's career for 13 years was as a partner at the firm that is currently known as Chivers Carpenter, Alberta's largest union-side labour law firm. His clients included many of Alberta's largest unions. Since 2004, Lyle has been practising in Toronto at the union law firm of Sack Goldblatt Mitchell. His labour law career has been exclusively on the union side.
Lyle is held in high regard as an ethical, conscientious, and creative lawyer who fights capably and hard for his clients, but it is nonetheless curious why a Conservative government would appoint such a strong union supporter to fulfill the important policy-making role of the Labour Relations Board. This appointment is a potential concern to employers because there is a heavy policy component in Labour Relations Board matters and sometimes considerable scope for personal inclinations to influence decisions. It will be interesting to see how he takes on the new role of being a "neutral" adjudicator.
